Insurance that actually works in Georgia

From 1 January 2026, insurance is mandatory for all foreign citizens entering Georgia

Georgia visa requirements for Indian citizens: e-visa and visa-free entry

Georgia visa requirements for Indian citizens come down to one rule: you need a Georgian visa, usually an e-visa from the official portal. The exception is a valid visa or residence permit from a listed country, such as the US, the UK, an EU country or a Gulf state. Every tourist entering Georgia also needs health insurance. We checked each rule against Georgian laws and government websites on 8 October 2026.

Do Indians need a visa for Georgia?

Yes. India is not on Georgia's list of countries whose citizens can visit without a visa (Ordinance of the Government of Georgia No. 255), so an Indian passport holder needs a Georgian visa, unless one of the exceptions below applies.

Entering Georgia without a Georgian visa: US, UK, EU or Gulf visa holders

If you hold a valid visa or residence permit from a country on Georgia's list, you can enter without a Georgian visa and stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The list is set by Ordinance of the Government of Georgia No. 256, and the visa or permit must be valid on the day you cross the border.

The list in Ordinance No. 256 names the United States, the United Kingdom (with some overseas territories and the Crown dependencies), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Israel, all 27 EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the six Gulf states: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. So a Schengen visa issued by one of these countries counts.

Georgia's embassy in the UAE says a UAE residence visa must be valid on both your entry and departure days; the Ordinance mentions only the day of entry. Keep it valid for the whole trip. Georgia's embassy in Jordan says only a visa sticker counts, not an electronic visa; the act sets no such condition. If your visa is electronic, check with a Georgian consulate before you book.

Entering this way closes one door: you cannot then get a Georgian residence permit, except an investment permit, a special permit or two types of temporary permit (Article 14 of the Law on Aliens).

Indian residents of the UAE and other Gulf countries

A valid visa or residence permit of any Gulf state lets an Indian citizen enter Georgia without a Georgian visa for up to 90 days in any 180. The stricter 2025 rule for Gulf permits does not name India.

From 16 May 2025, Ordinance of the Government of Georgia No. 122 (in Georgian) requires citizens of 17 listed countries to hold a multiple-entry Gulf visa or residence permit valid for at least one year. India is not among them, so the condition does not apply to Indian citizens as the act is written.

Living in a country that is not on the list? Apply at Georgia's embassy or consulate there, if you hold a valid multiple-entry visa or residence permit of that country (Article 6 of the Law on Aliens).

Rules for other nationalities, including UAE residents, are in our guide Georgia entry requirements.

How to apply for a Georgia e-visa as an Indian citizen

Apply online on Georgia's official e-visa portal, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The e-visa is for short-term trips, and the portal accepts applications from Indian passport holders.

Applying online: one form per person
  1. Fill in the application form in English on evisa.gov.ge.
  2. Upload your photo, then a scan of your passport as a PDF.
  3. Pay the fee by Visa or Mastercard within 5 hours of the email notification.
  4. Complete the second step, an identity check, within 24 hours.
  5. Receive your e-visa by email, print it and take it with you.

Each person, including a child, needs a separate e-visa. Ignore the COVID-era PCR and vaccination notes still on parts of the portal: they are out of date.

Georgia e-visa fees and processing time for Indians

The portal fee is 20 USD plus 2%, and it is not refunded if the visa is refused or not used. When you select India as your citizenship, the form adds a second mandatory step: an identity check at 15 USD per applicant.

The official texts differ on timing. The portal's FAQ says a decision takes at least 5 working days, while the Law on Aliens says the visa is issued no later than 5 working days after you apply. Apply well before your flight.

How long can you stay on a Georgia e-visa?

Your e-visa shows its validity and how many days you may stay. The portal says this depends on the passport, and Georgia has not published a fixed term for passports from India.

Georgian law caps the stay: a single-entry short-term visa allows up to 30 days, and a multiple-entry one up to 90 days in any 180.

Documents required for a Georgia visa for Indians

The e-visa application form lists eight documents, from a photo to proof of the trip's purpose. You fill in the form in English, and documents must be in English or Georgian.

These Georgia visa requirements for Indian citizens apply to every short-term trip:

  • Photo.
  • Passport scanned in a single PDF (see validity below).
  • Supporting document: a valid visa or residence permit of a listed country, if you have one; you can continue without it.
  • Proof of accommodation: a hotel booking or rental agreement for the entire stay.
  • Return ticket.
  • Travel insurance (next section).
  • Proof of funds, such as a bank statement for the last three months, an employer's letter, a property document or a sponsor's letter.
  • Proof of the trip's purpose.

The form does not mark which items are mandatory.

Indian passport validity for a Georgia visa

Your passport must remain valid for at least 3 months after your visa expires, have at least 2 blank pages, be undamaged and have been issued within the last 10 years.

Ordinance No. 253 of 8 June 2026 sets the same three-month rule.

Travel insurance for the Georgia e-visa

You need the policy at two points: the e-visa form asks you to tick ‘I have valid travel insurance’, and you must hold it when you enter Georgia. Georgian law requires health and accident cover of at least 30,000 GEL for the whole stay (Government Resolution No. 602, in Georgian; often called Decree 602).

You need the policy when you apply and at the border

The portal adds that the policy must cover health costs and be valid across all of Georgia. Without it, you can be turned away at the border (Article 11 of the Law on Aliens).

Our guide Is travel insurance mandatory for Georgia? explains what the policy must contain and who is exempt.

If your policy is not from a Georgian insurer, after an insured event a traveller often has to pay the clinic out of pocket first and only then get reimbursed. With an IRAO policy, the assistance service directs you to a partner clinic, and on the Standard and Premium plans the insurer pays the clinic directly for emergency hospitalisation.

Applying at the Georgian embassy in New Delhi

A regular visa is the alternative to the e-visa. Georgia's embassy in New Delhi is at 169 Jor Bagh, and for consular services it refers you to the ministry's consular portal. By law, a decision on a short-term visa comes within 10 calendar days of the application, a period that can be extended by 30 days.

We could not find the consular fee on the embassy's website, so check it when you book an appointment.

At the Georgian border: what to show and why entry can be refused

On an e-visa, carry the printed e-visa, your passport, proof of the trip's purpose, your accommodation booking, travel insurance and proof of funds. The border officer decides on entry, and Article 11 of the Law on Aliens lists the grounds for turning someone away.

They include incomplete or false information in a visa application, no insurance or funds, doubts that you will leave on time, and missing or false information about your identity or the purpose of the trip (Article 11 of the Law). The same grounds apply to visa applications.

Questions

Can Indians get a Georgia visa on arrival?

We found no official rule giving visitors from India a visa on arrival. Georgian law allows a visa at the border only in exceptional cases set by the government, so get your e-visa before you fly.

How much bank balance is required for a Georgia tourist visa?

We found no fixed amount in Georgian law. The portal asks for proof of funds, for example a bank statement for the last three months.

Why are Georgian visas refused?

We found no official refusal statistics. Article 11 of the Law on Aliens lists the grounds, such as false information or no insurance or funds. The fee is not refunded.

What is the difference between a Georgian visa and an e-visa?

An e-visa is issued online by Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for short trips. A regular visa comes from a Georgian embassy or consulate.

Does a child need a separate Georgia e-visa?

Yes. The portal requires a separate e-visa for every applicant, whatever their age.

Can I transit through Georgia without a visa?

Yes, if you stay in the airport transit area, hold the document to enter your destination country and spend no more than 10 days in Georgia.
