Long-stay travel insurance for Georgia: cover for 6 or 12 months

Staying several months in Georgia — the country on the Black Sea, not the US state? Your insurance has to cover the whole stay in Tbilisi, Batumi or anywhere else here, not just the first week. Cover runs from 3 to 12 months, meets the 30,000 GEL entry rule, and the policy arrives in English by email.

Short answer

Resolution No. 602 asks foreign nationals to hold health insurance for the whole stay, with a sum insured of at least 30,000 GEL, and for no longer than one year. One policy covers up to 360 days: €69.90 for 90 days, €229.90 for 360 — €0.64 a day. Buy before you fly or once you are here, and line up the next one so there is no gap.

Prices for long stays

The longer the term, the less you pay per day: long trips have their own price steps, not a stretched 90-day rate.

What the law requires for long stays

The rule comes from Government Resolution No. 602 of 26 December 2025 and applies since 1 January 2026. Three things matter on a long stay:

  1. The sum insured is at least 30,000 GEL. Both our plans carry exactly this sum, so Light satisfies the rule as fully as a dearer one.
  2. Cover runs for the entire stay. A policy that ends halfway through does not meet the rule, even if it was valid at the border.
  3. One year is the ceiling. The requirement stops at twelve months — nobody buys a policy longer than a year at once.

The insurer may be Georgian or foreign, but the policy must be in Georgian or English.

Does a nomad policy like SafetyWing or Genki count at the border?

It can. The rule is about what the document covers, not who sold it: medical and accident cover, at least 30,000 GEL, the whole stay, in Georgian or English. The catch is the sum insured — plans priced in dollars or euro often sit below 30,000 GEL once converted.

Three to six months, working and travelling. The travel policy is enough: it meets the rule and covers what happens on the road — injuries, infections, a tooth that gives up at the wrong moment.

A year or more, settling in. Take the travel policy for the entry rule and a local medical plan for what it never covers: routine visits, chronic conditions, dentistry.

Renewing and extending cover

Our policy covers up to 360 days in one go. Two cases need planning.

Staying 365 days. A 360-day policy leaves five days uncovered. Buy a short second policy for them, starting the day the first ends.

Staying longer than a year. The entry rule stops at twelve months, your need for cover does not: take the next policy from the day the old ends, or move to a local plan.

The mistake I see most often on long stays is a one-day hole between two policies. People buy the next one after the old has already expired, and that day is exactly when something happens. Set the new policy to start the day the old one ends — not later, not “some time this week”.

How to avoid a gap, in practice:

  1. Check the end date on your policy — cover ends at the end of that day.
  2. Buy the next one in advance, starting the day after.
  3. Keep both PDFs: together they show an unbroken period.

A policy can be bought while you are already in Georgia, starting the same day — no need to leave the country.

What is and isn’t covered on a long stay

A travel policy is built for sudden events, not ongoing treatment — over many months that difference shows.

The policy works only inside Georgia — anywhere in the country, nowhere beyond its borders.

Covered in full:

Not covered (IRAO policy terms, clause 9):

Over 65, expenses are reimbursed at 50% of the sum insured under IRAO’s terms. The policy still meets the entry rule — but count on the lower figure.

Residence permit holders and digital nomads

Resolution No. 602 applies to foreign nationals entering Georgia. With a residence permit you are not entering every day you live here — but the rule applies each time you cross the border. So:

Using your policy in Georgia

  1. Call the assistance number on your policy first — they pick the clinic and sort out payment.
  2. Keep every document — the doctor’s report, prescriptions, receipts: a reimbursement claim stands on them.
  3. Direct billing or reimbursement — assistance settles with the clinic, or you claim it back.

In an emergency call 112, then the assistance line. Details — claims page.

Who issues the policy

The insurer is IRAO, a licensed Georgian company and part of Vienna Insurance Group; 100doc.ge is its agent. At the border you show an IRAO policy — the same document the company issues directly. Details — about page.

How to buy in 3 steps

  1. Choose your dates — any term up to 360 days; the price per day falls as the term grows.
  2. Pay by card from any country, or by instant transfer from a Russian bank.
  3. Get the PDF by email within a minute, in English, ready for the border.

If the trip falls through, the policy is cancelled with a full refund while at least 48 hours remain before the start — write to help@100doc.ge with your order number.

FAQ

Can I buy travel insurance for 12 months?

One policy covers up to 360 days. For a full 365-day stay buy a short second policy for the last five days — two policies back to back satisfy the rule.

What if I stay longer than a year?

The entry rule stops at twelve months. Take a new policy from the day the old one ends, or move to a local medical plan.

Can I buy the policy if I’m already in Georgia?

Yes. The place of purchase and your passport make no difference, and cover can start the same day.

Does SafetyWing or Genki count at the border?

It counts if it covers medical expenses and accidents, holds at least 30,000 GEL for the whole stay and is in Georgian or English. Check the sum after conversion — that is where nomad plans fall short.

Is this policy valid for a residence permit application?

It meets the entry rule at the border. Permit requirements are set separately by the Public Service Development Agency.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

No. Chronic illnesses and conditions you had before the trip are excluded, except where urgent care is needed to save your life.

Can I cancel and get a refund?

Yes, in full, if at least 48 hours remain before the policy starts.

Does it cover trips to Armenia or Turkey?

No. The policy works only in Georgia. A weekend in Armenia or a visa run to Turkey is outside it — buy separate cover for those days.

Can I add my family?

Yes, in one order. Children pay the same on Light; on Standard a child’s policy is 10% cheaper.
